Do the leaves on fig trees turn yellow and fall off, or are my fig trees dying?

I live in upstate N.Y. My daughter bought me two fig trees for Mother's Day and I potted them in large containers. They grew beautifully this summer. Now the leaves are turning yellow and falling off. I'm not familiar with fig trees. Do they lose their leaves in the fall or are my little darlings dying?
